Congress to Seek NHRC Probe into 2019 Assam CAA Protest Deaths

The Opposition Congress plans to approach the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the deaths of five individuals during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam in 2019. Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi questioned the circumstances of these deaths, urging an investigation to determine responsibility. He highlighted concerns over the lack of accountability despite available CCTV footage and emphasized the need for legal due process rather than lethal force. The victims were allegedly killed in police firing during the December 2019 protests.
