Dibrugarh Citizens’ Body Seeks PM’s Probe into Alleged Illegal Mining Behind Assam Floods

Dibrugarh: The Dibrugarh Zila Nagarik Sanmilan has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking a high-level investigation into the recent floods in Upper Assam. The organisation alleged that illegal sand, stone, and coal mining, along with deforestation and unscientific mining practices in neighbouring hill areas, significantly worsened the flood situation.

The memorandum also called for strict action against those responsible, declaration of the floods as a national disaster, and a review of the under-construction 186 MW Dikhu Hydroelectric Project and other hydropower projects near the Assam-Nagaland border. The organisation urged the Centre to order an impartial inquiry and implement measures to prevent similar disasters in the future.
