E. Coli Outbreak in Silchar Linked to Contaminated Water Supply

Over 20 residents of Kathal Road-Bhakatpur, Silchar, were hospitalized with diarrhea and vomiting due to suspected water contamination. Stool tests confirmed E. coli infections in several cases.

Dr. Ashutosh Barman, Joint Director of Health Services, warned that water from the Public Health Engineering Department’s plant is unsafe for consumption. Despite this, the plant continues operations, raising public alarm.

Authorities have initiated awareness drives and are supplying water through tankers. PHE Executive Engineer Debdulal Das stated that the reservoir has been cleaned, and efforts are underway to ensure safe drinking water.
