ECI Imposes Silence Period, Bans Exit Polls for Assam Elections

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has enforced a 48-hour silence period from April 7 (5 PM) to April 9 (5 PM) ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
Under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, all TV, radio, and cable platforms are barred from broadcasting election-related content that may influence voters during this period.
The ECI has also prohibited exit polls under Section 126A, with the ban effective from April 9 (7 AM) to April 29 (6:30 PM). Publishing or broadcasting exit poll data during this time is a criminal offence, punishable with up to two years in jail or a fine.
The Commission has directed media outlets to strictly comply, warning of legal action for any violations.
