First Transgender Advocate in Assam Arrested in Abetment to Suicide Case

Swati Bidhan Baruah, the first transgender advocate in Assam, was arrested on charges of abetment to suicide after a 20-year-old boy, Mansur Alom, took his own life in Guwahati’s Pandu area. The deceased’s family filed an FIR against Baruah, alleging mental torture. Baruah had previously lodged a rape complaint against Alom, who was on bail awaiting trial. The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Alom’s suicide, while Baruah has been remanded to judicial custody after appearing in court.
