Gandhi Ashram in Jorhat Neglected Amid Independence Day Preparations

As India prepares for its 78th Independence Day, Jorhat’s district administration is making grand plans. However, the Gandhi Ashram in Sarbaibandha, Jorhat, where Mahatma Gandhi once stayed, lies neglected and overrun by domestic animals. Established in 1936 by freedom fighter Krishnanath Sharma, this site, known as the second Sabarmati Ashram, is now desolate. Despite repeated appeals from locals, the State government and district administration have neglected its conservation.
