Gauhati High Court Rejects PIL for Castration of Rape Convicts

The Gauhati High Court has dismissed a PIL seeking compulsory castration of rape convicts, stating such policies must align with each state’s ground realities. The bench, led by Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi, declined to direct Assam to adopt schemes from other states.

In its affidavit, Assam Police stated that crime against women in the state is declining. It highlighted its zero-tolerance approach, regular crime reviews, 320 women help desks, and special cells for women across 11 districts.

The CID monitors POCSO and gender-based crimes to ensure timely trials. A proposal for five new POCSO courts has been submitted for districts including Bongaigaon and Dibrugarh.
