Gauhati University Plans Expansion to Tackle Brain Drain and Boost Enrollment
To curb brain drain and increase student enrollment, Gauhati University plans to introduce new courses, recruit field experts, and start second-shift classes. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta highlighted that around 24,000 students apply for postgraduate courses annually, but only 1,800 are admitted.
The second-shift proposal aims to accommodate more students and improve revenue. Discussions with institutes like the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology are underway to enhance IT education.
Efforts to enrich academic quality include collaborations with experts like Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita for geopolitics and Prof. Nayan Sarma for river studies.
