Guwahati Municipal Corporation Cracks Down on Tax Evaders and Unlicensed Businesses

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is intensifying efforts to boost revenue collection and enforce local regulations. In a recent move on February 18, the GMC targeted over 50 properties with unpaid taxes exceeding Rs. 2 crores, issuing warrants to address the issue of non-payment. The Commissioner of GMC emphasized that this action is aimed at individuals and groups neglecting their property tax responsibilities, with potential property seizures under sections 189(1) and 189(2) of the Guwahati Municipal Act 1971 if debts remain unpaid.

Additionally, GMC is rigorously enforcing trade license laws. Operations on February 16 resulted in penalties for businesses operating without required licenses. The AD Service Centre and A R Steel Trading faced fines for violating trade license regulations, while Madan Lal Pareek incurred penalties for operating multiple businesses with a single trade license, violating municipal rules.

GMC is strategically targeting property tax evaders and unlicensed businesses to promote financial order and adherence to regulations in the city. The focus is not only on collecting outstanding dues but also on reminding residents and businesses to comply with rules and regulations. The Commissioner emphasized the necessity of maintaining the city’s smooth operation and affording the services it provides. GMC’s robust stance against rule violations underscores the mandatory nature of taxes and business licenses in a city that aims to function efficiently and adhere to established rules.
