Inadequate Drainage and Wetland Destruction Cause Flooding in Dhekiajuli, Assam

Following heavy rains, several areas in Dhekiajuli under Assam’s Sonitpur district were inundated on Thursday morning. Former honorary wildlife warden Saurav Borkakati highlighted the increasing incidence of artificial floods in the region, exacerbated each year. Incessant rainfall over the past two days has led to floods in Ward 5 and the Mitham area, significantly impacting residents due to inadequate drainage systems.

Residents criticize the Dhekiajuli municipality for not constructing sufficient drainage infrastructure. Historically, the region’s wetlands acted as natural reservoirs, mitigating flood impacts. However, the destruction and pollution of these wetlands have diminished their capacity to manage excess water. Naturalists and researchers attribute the increasing artificial floods to the loss of wetlands and poor waste management, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable environmental practices.
