India Records Highest-Ever Tea Export

India exported a record 280 million kilograms of tea in the last financial year, the highest ever, Tea Board Deputy Chairman C Murugan said. Major exports were made to Iran, Iraq, UAE and former USSR countries.

Murugan said Indian tea faces competition from Kenya and Sri Lanka due to lower production costs there, but demand for Indian orthodox and CTC tea is growing, including in China.

He also clarified that the Jorhat Tea Auction Centre has not been closed and will resume operations from August after a new vendor is appointed.
