Joint Awareness Programme Combats Rabies Outbreak in Sonitpur District

A collaborative effort between the Sonitpur Health Services Department and the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department organized an awareness program on rabies at L.P. School, Kakalbhagi (Nathgaon). The initiative follows a confirmed case of rabies in cattle under the State Veterinary Dispensary, Khelmati. Health, veterinary, and district administration officials, along with local residents, conducted various anti-rabies activities to control the spread of the disease. ADC (Veterinary) Dr. Garga Mohan Das facilitated the event, fostering a comprehensive platform for rabies control and prevention. Expert panels addressed public inquiries, emphasizing symptoms, preventive measures, and the importance of vaccination for animals and humans. The recent rabies case, reported on March 13 and confirmed on March 3, prompted urgent action, including anti-rabies vaccination for the affected individuals. District Veterinary Officer highlighted rabies as a fatal zoonotic disease, emphasizing the need for vigilance and reporting to control its spread. The program sheds light on the underreported nature of rabies cases, with last year’s two recorded deaths in Sonitpur District underscoring the urgency of comprehensive prevention efforts.
