Jonbeel Mela: A Unique Barter Tradition to Begin on January 16
Jonbeel Mela, an age-old cultural and trade festival, will take place from January 16 to 18 at Jonbeel Pathar, near Jagiroad in Morigaon district. Organized by the Gova Tiwa Deoraja Raj Darbar and Jonbeel Mela Development Samiti, it features the rare practice of barter trade between hill and plains people.
Hill residents from 58 Karbi Anglong villages and 20 Meghalaya villages will exchange essential goods with plains people on January 17. Other highlights include Raj Darbar sessions, a cultural festival, and community fishing at the natural Jonbeel lake.
The event traces its origins to the 15th century when it was introduced by the Ahom kings to foster harmony between hill and plains communities. The tradition continues, preserving its historical and cultural significance.
