Matak Community Protests in Dibrugarh for ST Status

The Matak community in Assam held protests in Dibrugarh demanding Scheduled Tribes (ST) status. Supported by the All Assam Matak Sammelan and other organizations, the protest included a three-hour sit-in at Chowkidingee. The BJP-led government had promised ST status before elections but failed to deliver. Two Matak MLAs criticized the lack of action in the Assembly. A 12-point memorandum was sent to the Chief Minister, demanding ST status, an autonomous council, and steps to address floods and illegal immigration. The community also requested that Sarbananda Singha Divas be declared a state holiday.
