Mirabai Chanu Wins India’s First Gold at Commonwealth Games

Glasgow (Scotland): Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu secured India’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games by winning the women’s 48kg weightlifting event with a record-breaking total lift of 190kg.
The Manipur weightlifting star lifted 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, setting new Commonwealth Games records. Despite missing her opening attempts in both categories, Mirabai bounced back strongly to dominate the competition.
The victory marks her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal after triumphs in 2018 and 2022. Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed silver with a total lift of 168kg, finishing 22kg behind the Indian champion. Mirabai skipped her final lift to conserve energy ahead of the upcoming Asian Games.
