Overcrowding at GMCH Highlights Trust Deficit in State Medical Colleges

Despite having 14 medical colleges, most patients in Assam prefer Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. This has led to severe overcrowding, with GMCH handling 3,000 OPD patients and over 2,300 admissions daily. Doctors cite lack of specialists, infrastructure, and public trust in other colleges as key reasons. Serious cases are often referred to GMCH, worsening the burden. Departments like Gynecology and Pediatrics face extreme pressure, while staff shortages compromise patient care. Doctors stress the urgent need to improve facilities and restore confidence in local medical colleges.
