Rajya Sabha Passes Bill to Establish IIM Guwahati, Second in Northeast

The Rajya Sabha has passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, approving the creation of IIM Guwahati — India’s 22nd IIM and the second in the Northeast after Shillong. With an investment of ₹555 crore, the institute aims to position Assam as an educational hub.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the move as historic, while the Congress supported the idea but questioned the Bill’s passage process and budget clarity. IIM Ahmedabad will mentor the new institute to ensure academic excellence.

IIM Guwahati will focus on areas like agribusiness, tourism, sustainability, and digital transformation, aligning with the region’s strengths. The institute is expected to boost local entrepreneurship, offer global collaborations, and strengthen Assam’s role in higher education and management research.
