Reunion Amidst Tragedy: Assam Girl Reconnects with Family After 15 Years

In a poignant yet distressing tale from Assam’s Sonitpur district, a girl named Anita Khediya has finally reunited with her parents after a staggering 15-year separation. Anita, a resident of Sootea, was entrusted to an Arunachali couple in 2008 by her parents, Bandhan and Phuleswari Khediya, due to their family’s financial struggles.

However, the Arunachali couple deceived Anita’s parents with a fake address, making it impossible for them to visit their daughter. Anita found herself trapped as a child laborer in Hapoli, Ziro, with no means to contact her family.

After 15 years, Anita managed to reach out to her sister through Facebook, seeking rescue. With the assistance of the NGO ‘One Stop,’ based in Lower Subansiri district, Anita was rescued and brought to Sootea Police Station before finally reuniting with her parents.

Anita, now 23, has not received any formal education during her years of separation and lacks personal identity documents. Despite the hardships, she expressed gratitude for the assistance of the NGO, emphasizing her journey back home after years of disconnection.
