Rising HIV/AIDS Cases in Assam Prompt Government Action Against Drug Injection

Assam has seen a notable increase in HIV/AIDS cases, with injecting drugs identified as the primary cause, as stated by Health Minister Keshab Mahanta. Since 2022-23, 31,729 HIV-positive cases have been reported, with Kamrup (Metro) leading at 8,960 cases. In 2023, 9,90,372 tests were conducted, revealing 5,791 new cases. The surge is attributed to drug injection, prompting the state government to intensify efforts against illegal drugs. Mahanta emphasized ongoing awareness initiatives, testing, counseling, and treatment facilities provided at government-run hospitals, health centers, and vulnerable locations like prisons. The government remains committed to curbing the rising HIV/AIDS trend in the state.
