Smuggled Burmese Betel Nut Threatens Tripura Farmers’ Livelihood
The illegal influx of Burmese betel nut into Tripura is severely impacting local farmers and the state’s agricultural economy. Smuggled through secret routes, these betel nuts flood the market, making it hard for local farmers to compete. Allegations suggest involvement of a political outfit in the trade. Demand from Assam has also dropped, leaving farmers with unsold produce and financial losses. Once a thriving industry, betel nut farming in Tripura is now struggling. Farmers urge the government to take immediate action to stop smuggling and protect their livelihoods.
