Supreme Court Orders Assam to Submit Deportation Plan for Detained Foreign Nationals
The Supreme Court has directed the Assam government to submit a detailed deportation plan for 211 foreign nationals held at the Matia transit camp in Goalpara. The Court emphasized that deportation must be a coordinated effort between the Union and state governments, following an affidavit from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The directive came during a hearing on the poor conditions in Assam’s detention centres. The Court also highlighted the need for diplomatic engagement with Bangladesh, as the detainees are reportedly Bangladeshi nationals. The Matia camp, originally a detention centre, was reclassified as a “transit camp” for a more humane approach.
