Surge in Japanese Encephalitis Cases in Assam Leads to 22 Deaths

Assam faces a surge in Japanese Encephalitis (JE) cases, with Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) admitting 90 patients since April 1, 2024. The outbreak has resulted in 22 deaths. GMCH Superintendent Dr. Abhijit Sarma reported a significant increase compared to last year, with 40 patients still undergoing treatment. Many patients were in critical condition upon arrival, contributing to the high mortality rate. JE treatment is symptomatic, as there is no curative medicine for the virus. Health authorities urge preventive measures, including mosquito repellents and proper sanitation, to combat the spread.
