Temporary Closure of Saraighat Bridge Causes Major Traffic Disruptions in Guwahati
The old Saraighat bridge, which connects the north and south banks of Guwahati, has been temporarily closed for maintenance work, causing significant traffic disruptions. The rail-cum-road bridge will be unavailable for the next two days to address large cracks. The railway department initiated repair work, resulting in long traffic jams on Saturday and forcing commuters to seek alternative routes.
Traffic has been diverted to the new Saraighat bridge nearby, which will handle the load until repairs are completed. The bridge closure started at 11 am and aims to reopen within two days to minimize inconvenience. The Saraighat bridge, a vital connection for Northeast India, was originally constructed between 1959 and 1962 by Hindustan Construction Company.
