IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Assam as Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Northeast India

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted increased rainfall across the Northeast Indian region for the upcoming week, issuing a Yellow Alert for Assam until July 16. The IMD predicts widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over East and Northeast India. Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas of Assam and Meghalaya from July 12 to 16, and in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, and other regions on specific dates.

The cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and a trough extending to the northwest Bay of Bengal are the primary causes for the predicted rainfall. Additionally, a flash flood warning has been issued for multiple locations in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya on July 12 and 13.

This weather alert comes amid severe flooding in Assam, with the death toll reaching 90. Floods have affected 2,406 villages across 24 districts, including Goalpara, Kamrup, Nagaon, and Dibrugarh, with Goalpara being the worst hit. Over 1.2 million people remain impacted by the floods, and 186 relief camps are providing shelter to 39,000 people.
