Tezpur University Celebrates International Museum Day with Weeklong Activities

To highlight the significance of museums, the Department of Cultural Studies at Tezpur University organized a weeklong series of events from May 13 to May 18, culminating in International Museum Day on May 18. Coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), this year’s theme was “Museums for Education and Research,” aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

Inaugurating the event, Vice Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh emphasized museums’ role in education and cultural preservation, citing his visit to the Smithsonian as an example of how museums bridge the past and present. Prof. Farheena Danta, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, highlighted museums as spaces fostering learning and research.

Abhilash Rajkhowa, District Museum Officer, gave a talk on “Redefining Museum Visits: Exploring Fresh Perspective,” discussing preservation techniques. The event featured exhibitions and guided tours of the Cultural Interpretation Centre and Neelpawan Baruah Museum of Modern Art, attracting a diverse audience of students, faculty, staff, and local residents.
