ULFA-I Considers Alternative Punishment for Accused Spy after Confessions and Internal Investigation
After nearly a month of apprehension, the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has decided to explore alternative punishment for Manash Borgohain, accused of spying on the organization. ULFA-I revealed in a press release that an internal investigation uncovered Borgohain’s involvement in serious crimes and conspiracies, including sabotaging their internal communication system and engaging in covert operations against high-ranking officers. The banned outfit also implicated senior police officials, including the Director General of Assam Police and Deputy Inspector General, in the plan to infiltrate spies.
The press release detailed the training conducted by a notorious criminal, Manas Chaliha, who allegedly trained Borgohain and other indigenous youths for the operation. Following a trial on February 13, the lower court accepted Borgohain’s plea for atonement through dedicated service within the organization. He was disqualified from membership for five years, sentenced to one year of physical labor, and four years of self-correction through a positive work culture. A Monitoring and Review Committee will oversee the implementation, with strict adherence to the Code of Conduct mandated during this period. The press release emphasized that failure to utilize this opportunity for positive change would absolve the organization of any liability for adverse consequences.
