West Karbi Anglong Calmer After Violence; Security Tightened, Talks Planned

The situation in West Karbi Anglong showed signs of stabilising on Wednesday, a day after violence left two people dead. Central forces, the Indian Army, and additional Assam Police units have been deployed, though shops, schools, and internet services remain suspended.
Protests continued over the deaths of Suraj Dey and Athi Timung, with demands for justice. Assam DGP Harmeet Singh said the unrest was fuelled by misinformation and warned of strict action, adding that police have video evidence of the violence.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will chair a tripartite meeting on December 26 to address grievances and restore normalcy.
