Forest Encroachment Leads to Wild Animal Incursions in Sonitpur District
The encroachment of forests near the Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Sonitpur district has led to wild animals, especially elephants, venturing into human habitats in search of food, causing tension among villagers. Gopal Deka, a local resident, reported significant damage to fields and villages despite efforts by forest workers to drive the elephants back. The elephants have destroyed paddy fields, vegetables, and fruit trees in villages like Jiya Gabharu, Rikamari, Dighalijuli, and others. Although sightings have slightly decreased, nocturnal raids continue, with elephants even breaking into houses.
Additionally, an increasing monkey population has exacerbated the situation over the past decade. Monkeys have been ransacking homes and temples, particularly the Shiva temple in Chariduar, leading to injuries as villagers defend their properties. The damage has forced locals to build sturdier homes and request government intervention to return the primates to the forest.
