₹763 Crore Projects Approved for Northeast Waterway Development under Sagarmala

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced six projects worth ₹763 crore under the Sagarmala Programme to enhance inland water transport (IWT) in the northeast. Key allocations include:
- ₹461 crore for National Waterway-2 (Brahmaputra River).
- ₹145 crore for National Waterway-16 (Barak River) and the Indo-Bangladesh route.
- ₹103 crore for a multimodal terminal at Pandu (NW-2).
- Smaller terminals at Dhubri, Badarpur, and Sribhumi under NW-2 and NW-16.
The Ministry has approved ₹645.56 crore for Assam’s terminal and slipway infrastructure. A tourist jetty at Biswanath Ghat will also be developed by IPRCL, with a floating terminal provided by IWAI for cruise operations.
The Sagarmala Programme focuses on port-led development through modernisation, connectivity, and sustainable transportation.
