SC Directs High Courts to Improve Washroom Facilities in Courts, Calls It a Human Right Issue
The Supreme Court of India, in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by lawyer Rajiv Kalita, highlighted the lack of adequate washroom facilities in courts as a critical issue, reflecting flaws in the justice system. The court stressed that access to proper sanitation is a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.
The Supreme Court directed all high courts to take immediate action to ensure proper washroom facilities for men, women, and transgender individuals, including facilities for sanitary napkin dispensers in women’s toilets. The court also expressed concern about the state of district courts, especially in rural areas, where even judges often lack basic sanitation facilities.
A monitoring committee will be set up in each high court to oversee the implementation of these measures, with a report due within six weeks.
