Mizoram Passes Bill Allowing Locally Made Wine & Beer

The Mizoram Assembly passed an amendment permitting the production, sale, and supply of wine and beer made from locally grown fruits like pineapple, passion fruit, and dragon fruit. The move aims to boost farmers’ income while maintaining the ban on hard liquor.

Economic Boost: Farmers can process and sell wine and beer, creating new income opportunities.

Controlled Sale: Only locally made products are allowed; no imports from outside the state.

Exceptions: Foreign and local dignitaries may bring or buy liquor under special permissions.

Opposition Walkout: MNF, BJP, and Congress protested, claiming it weakens liquor prohibition and disregards church and NGO concerns.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma defended the bill, stating it strengthens alcohol control while benefiting farmers and tourism.
