Centre Approves Release of Critically Endangered Vultures in Kaziranga Landscape

The Central Zoo Authority has approved the transfer of 30 white-rumped vultures and five slender-billed vultures from the Vulture Conservation and Breeding Centre in Rani, Guwahati, to the Bishwanath Wildlife Division, part of Kaziranga National Park.
Both species are critically endangered and protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act. Assam remains a key stronghold for slender-billed vultures, though populations of both species continue to decline due to poisoning from contaminated cattle carcasses.
Kaziranga authorities have built a release aviary near Tewaripal forest camp, and the birds will be released in the coming months. The site was chosen for its suitable habitat, strong anti-poaching measures and availability of carrion. Community awareness programmes are also underway.
