Assam, Madhya Pradesh Agree on Inter-State Wildlife Exchange

Assam and Madhya Pradesh have reached a principled agreement on the inter-state exchange of wild animals to boost biodiversity. The understanding was finalised during a meeting between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav in Guwahati.
Under the plan, Assam will send 50 wild water buffaloes to Madhya Pradesh in phases over three years, along with a pair of one-horned rhinoceroses and three king cobras. The buffaloes will be reintroduced at Kanha Tiger Reserve, while the rhinos and cobras will be housed at Van Vihar National Park, Bhopal. In return, Madhya Pradesh will provide Assam with a pair of tigers and six mugger crocodiles, marking a major step in inter-state wildlife conservation efforts.
