Assam Plans Dark Sky Parks to Curb Light Pollution, Boost Astro-Tourism

The Assam government has initiated plans to establish dark sky parks or reserves to reduce light pollution, promote astro-tourism and protect nocturnal biodiversity. The proposal has received in-principle Cabinet approval, with scientific studies conducted at eight locations.

Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park and Dima Hasao have emerged as leading candidates due to high night-sky purity. The next phase will involve detailed evaluation, inter-departmental coordination and preparation for international certification.

The initiative will include regulated lighting, community awareness and eco-tourism measures, aiming to position Assam as a hub for dark sky conservation while supporting biodiversity and sustainable tourism.
