Meghalaya Grants Official Language Status to Khasi and Garo

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the Meghalaya Official Language Ordinance, 2026 has received approval from Governor C. H. Vijayashankar, officially recognising Khasi and Garo as state languages alongside English.

The ordinance replaces the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005, and aims to promote indigenous languages, improve administrative accessibility and strengthen efforts to include Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
