Himanta Biswa Sarma Resigns as Assam CM After NDA’s Massive Poll Victory

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya after the BJP-led NDA secured a landslide victory in the Assembly elections. Sarma also requested the dissolution of the current Assembly, which the Governor accepted.

The present government will continue in a caretaker role until the new chief minister and cabinet are sworn in. Sarma said the BJP legislature party meeting is likely on May 10 or 11 to decide the next leader. The oath-taking ceremony is expected after May 11, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited to attend.

The BJP-led NDA returned to power in Assam for a third straight term with a two-thirds majority in the 126-member Assembly.
