Meghalaya Launches ‘Tracing the Roots’ Programme to Document Tribal Heritage

Tura: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has launched the ‘Tracing the Roots’ programme in Tura to scientifically research and document the history, migration, culture and identity of the state’s Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo communities. The initiative was launched on September 1, coinciding with the 79th birth anniversary of his late father, Purno Agitok Sangma, whose vision inspired the project.

The programme will use research in areas including history, oral traditions, linguistics, archaeology and indigenous knowledge. Around 75 scholars are expected to undertake research visits to Vietnam, Cambodia and Tibet, while a dedicated e-portal will support digital archives and research collaboration. Sangma said the initiative aims to preserve Meghalaya’s cultural heritage and ensure its history and identity remain documented for future generations.
