Dalai Lama Succession Could Intensify Tibet Issue, Report Warns

Beijing: China’s refusal to engage in dialogue with the Dalai Lama reflects a strategy to control his succession after his passing and weaken the Tibetan cause, according to Khedroob Thondup, nephew of the 14th Dalai Lama, in The Tibet Express. He said Beijing fears that negotiations could grant the Tibetan spiritual leader political legitimacy and encourage other minority regions to seek greater autonomy.
Thondup warned that a state-appointed successor could face rejection among Tibetan Buddhists, potentially intensifying resistance and increasing international support for Tibet. He stressed that Tibetan exiles must maintain unity, while the international community should continue supporting religious freedom and cultural preservation.
