Assam Forest Department Implements Measures to Mitigate Human-Elephant Conflicts
The Assam State Forest Department has undertaken special measures to address the ongoing conflict between wild elephants and humans in several villages, particularly those near reserve forest areas under the Singra Forest Range of West Kamrup Division. A herd of elephants, including calves, has been grazing in these villages, causing sleepless nights for residents and disrupting their daily activities. To alleviate the situation, a forest team led by Ranger Bhargabh Hazarika has deployed a mobile awareness unit to educate villagers about the consequences of human-elephant conflicts.
The team emphasizes maintaining a safe distance from wild elephants to minimize conflicts and encourages residents to promptly inform the Forest Department of any encounters. However, tension persists among villagers due to damage to crops and suspicions that the elephants’ movement may have been hindered by ongoing road construction. Villagers urge the state government to find a solution to ensure the peaceful coexistence of humans and elephants, allowing the animals to return to their natural habitat without further disruption.
