Assam Govt Withdraws Integrated ESZ Plan Around Kaziranga, Conservationists Alarmed

The Assam government has withdrawn its proposal for a 3,600 sq km integrated Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga and seven other protected areas, citing unresolved land boundaries and the impact on about 5 lakh people across 340 villages. Conservationists have strongly criticized the move, warning of ecological consequences. The government plans to submit separate ESZ proposals for each area. Concerns also emerge over halted additions to Kaziranga, potential de-notifications, and illegal fishing permits in protected zones.
