Closure of Historic Convoy Road Railroad Crossing Announced
The iconic WWII-era Convoy Road railroad crossing in Dibrugarh will be officially closed on December 30. Vehicular traffic had already been barred from the crossing since last Friday.
Built during the late 1930s for Allied Forces convoys en route to Burma, the crossing stands on India’s second-oldest railway line, operational since 1873.
The closure coincides with the nearing completion of the Convoy Road flyover, set to open by January 2025. Delayed by land acquisition disputes, the project resumed last year after compensation rates were revised.
Local voices, including Alfred Shams, criticized the flyover’s two-lane design, predicting future traffic issues. Citizens also noted a lack of provisions for small vehicles to access Banipur railway terminus. Critics blamed poor planning by engineers and political apathy for these shortcomings.
