Gauhati High Court Flags Delayed Cases Against Lawmakers, Seeks Expedited Action

The Gauhati High Court has raised concerns over the long-pending cases against MPs and MLAs in Assam’s district courts. A division bench of Justice Suman Shyam and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury noted delays in evidence collection and accused persons’ appearances, with some cases pending for over a decade. The court questioned the lack of action and directed the Registry to compile a report. It also called for identifying cases stalled due to stay orders and suggested forming a Special or Designated Bench for swift disposal. The next hearing is set for April 29, 2025.
