Gauhati High Court Halts Eviction of 43 Families in Sarabbhati Area

The Gauhati High Court, in a significant development, has issued a stay order on the eviction of 43 families residing in Guwahati’s Sarabbhati (Arya Nagar) area until further notice. The families, who have lived in the Sarabbhati to Chabipul stretch for many years, were facing eviction following a notice served by authorities on February 13.

Reports indicate that the families, originally from Bangladesh, settled in the area in 1951 and obtained permission from the then-district commissioner in 1956 to build houses and reside in the region. Despite their longstanding presence, authorities served eviction notices, shocking the families and prompting legal action.

The Gauhati High Court’s intervention directs authorities not to take any eviction action until further orders. The stay order brings temporary relief to the affected families, allowing them to continue residing in the area while the legal proceedings unfold. The case highlights the complex issues surrounding land and residency rights, especially for those with historical permissions dating back several decades.
