Groom and Seven Others Arrested for Attempted Marriage of Minor in Karimganj

An overnight police operation in Kabariband village, Karimganj district, led to the arrest of eight individuals, including the groom and his father, for attempting to marry a minor girl. Despite stringent government directives against child marriage, the ceremony had progressed to the “Qubool Qubool” ritual when police intervened. The minor girl, already dressed as a bride, was rescued, and is now under the care of the Child Welfare Association. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing laws against child marriage in the region, despite statewide crackdowns. The detainees face legal consequences and are held in custody. The event underscores broader societal struggles against entrenched traditions and the push for modernization and legal adherence, urging community support to prevent child marriage and safeguard the rights of minors.
