Massive 7.7 Magnitude Quake Hits Myanmar, Aftershocks Continue

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, triggering at least seven aftershocks within five hours. The tremors were felt across the Northeast, but no damage has been reported there.

Seismologists warn of more aftershocks, with expert Prof. JR Kayal stating that the region is highly seismic. The Sagaing fault, which has seen multiple major quakes since 1900, caused the quake. A 7.0 magnitude aftershock followed within 12 minutes.

Seismologist Saurav Baruah cautioned that aftershocks could persist for months and may trigger tremors in the Indo-Myanmar subduction zone. A 3.7 magnitude quake was also recorded in Manipur. The National Centre for Seismology highlighted the region’s history of major quakes, urging vigilance.
