Opposition Leader Criticizes Inflation Disparity in Northeast India
Debabrata Saikia, leader of the opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, highlighted the significant inflation of essential commodity prices in Northeast Indian states compared to other regions. He attributed this disparity to the failure of state governments in implementing the Consumer Protection Act of 2009 effectively. Saikia compared prices of items like rice, gram, moong dal, masoor dal, mustard oil, and onions, noting higher costs in the Northeast. For instance, while rice is priced at Rs 40–43 in Assam, it’s available for Rs 38–40 in other states. Similarly, gram, moong dal, masoor dal, mustard oil, and onions also exhibit considerable price differences. Saikia’s remarks underscore the pressing need for better price control measures in the region.
