Renowned weightlifter Popy Hazarika, who represented India at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, expressed the significance of the Khelo India University Games 2023 for athletes across 200 universities. The marquee event, hosted in Guwahati from February 19, is seen as a platform to establish young athletes in the big league and is expected to boost the sporting culture in Assam. Raised in challenging circumstances, Popy, a gold medallist at the Khelo India National Weightlifting Championships 2022, emphasized the massive exposure such tournaments provide, shaping individuality and building confidence. She praised Assam’s growing stature in sports, citing improved infrastructure and state support, including job opportunities for medallists. Popy anticipates the KIUG 2023 will produce numerous champions from her home state.
