Assam Law Enforcement Strikes Hard Against Drug Menace: Poppy Farms Destroyed in Barpeta, Marijuana Bust at Bongaigaon Railway Station

Barpeta district police in Assam achieved a significant victory in the battle against the rising drug problem by meticulously executing a plan to eradicate 305 quintals of illegal poppy cultivation and 82,080 poppy plants. Led by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Barpeta and an Executive Magistrate on February 13, 2024, the operation exposed hidden illegal cultivation amidst corn crops at Bhatnapaity Char under Kachumara Police Station. Acting under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, the police destroyed the illegal poppy cultivation, marking a substantial win against drug trafficking and demonstrating the authorities’ unwavering commitment. A case has been initiated, and a thorough investigation is underway to identify and bring those involved in the illegal cultivation to justice.

Simultaneously, the Railway police in Bongaigaon intercepted a significant amount of marijuana, weighing 29 kg, on the Humsafar Express at the New Bongaigaon railway station. This successful operation further strengthens the fight against drugs. The Assam Railway Police apprehended Meghan Paswan, Ramen Debbarma, Iti Debbarma, Dharmendra Paswan, and Mohammad Mustakim, who are linked to the illegal transportation of marijuana, and they are currently in railway police custody. Ongoing investigations will delve deeper into the drug trafficking network.
