Protests Mount Against Oil Drilling Near Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary

Opposition is growing over the Centre’s approval for oil drilling in the eco-sensitive zone of Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary. Farmers’ group KMSS protested in Mariani, demanding the withdrawal of approval granted to Vedanta’s Cairn Oil and Gas Company. They argue the drilling threatens the habitat of endangered species, including Hoolock gibbons and elephants.

Environmental groups, including SFI and DYFI, have also voiced their objections. Despite assurances of minimal impact, protesters remain unconvinced, fearing irreversible damage to the sanctuary.
