Assam Education Minister Clarifies: No Immediate Plans to Amalgamate Colleges, Focus on Increasing Enrolment
Amidst concerns regarding reports of not recruiting new teachers in colleges with low student enrolment, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu clarified on Tuesday that there are currently no plans to amalgamate colleges. Pegu emphasized ongoing efforts to boost enrolment in such colleges, urging principals to actively work towards making institutions sustainable. While the government had earlier hinted at stopping teachers’ recruitment and merging institutions with low enrolment, Pegu clarified that, at present, there are no concrete plans for amalgamation. However, he highlighted that action might be considered if colleges fail to attract students even after concerted efforts.
